June 24, 2025, Percy (for Persistent) the Pelican is injured from fishing wire. He can swim and probably eat, but he cannot fly.
Percy is currently stuck at the middle pond (pond #2) of the 3 ponds at Golden Ponds, Longmont, Colorado. I last checked on him 7/25/25.
Many relevant authorities are aware of him and his situation, but we are still awaiting action.
Good news—On July 26, Percy was rescued! This was in large part due to a group of very persuasive bird advocates! Thank you to Longmont Park Rangers, CPW, animal control officers and many, many volunteers. He was safely rescued and is now at a wildlife rehabilitation facility. We wish him the best.
UPDATE 7/26/25, mid-afternoon: Birds of Prey vets tried to save Percy, but a fishing hook had mangled the inner workings of his wing and so they had to euthanize him.
There are many lessons to be learned here...for some reason I keep thinking about the story of Bambi.

Please enjoy this gallery of images taken over a period of 4 weeks. All, except for photo #1, are of Percy. May he live on this page and in our memories.
